Some think classics such as this should be enjoyed as they were written - and not put into plain English. To these people I say - don't read this book. Enjoy the myriad of un-translated classics just as they were written.I wish something like this were available many decades ago when I had to read this for a school assignment. It would have helped a lot.I *love* to read - but I never enjoyed all the reading assignments in school. I never had the time, or patience when younger.Now that I'm older, and have a bit more time available - I enjoy reading Milton's "Paradise Lost" as he wrote it. But for those students who find Milton difficult to navigate - enjoy this version.
This book saved my GPA. Here's the thing: I HATE Milton. I can't get through 20 lines without wanting to chuck the book out the window, let alone all 12 books of Paradise Lost. But I'm getting an MA in English and I had to take the class, so this book saved my grade and maybe even more than that, considering Milton makes me want to walk into oncoming traffic.The "translation" is absolutely awful from an aesthetic, literary perspective, though. There were some passages that made me laugh out loud, and believe me, Paradise Lost is not meant to be a comedy. True, the translation is meant to be read side by side with the original text, but I did not have time for that--I just needed to get the gist and move on with my life. Still, I was able to write a 25 page paper on Paradise Lost having only read this translation. I simply highlighted passages that were relevant to my argument, and then consulted the original text by matching up the line numbers so I could quote. Piece of cake.If you're looking for an aesthetic experience, you can do better. But if you just need to get the job done--if Milton is being forced upon you and you'd rather claw out your own eyeballs than read him--this will work just fine.
I read bits and pieces of Milton's masterpiece almost a decade ago, with many questions. This translations answered most of them.My only (major) complaint is that the usual annotations explaining biblical/English Renaissance period references should have been next to the translations, since this entire book is a side-by-side of the original text and explanations.
Although the epic is in English, only a student of old English can understand the book. The new version unlocks the beauty that is in this book. Now many more can see that Paradise Lost is truly a work of art. However, the reason I gave it 3 stars is due to the fact that the translation, at times, fails to capture the beauty that is John Milton. Some of the scenes are flat and lack the emotion and beauty that is written by John Milton.
A must read for those who are curious about the history of what may have happened to Adam & Eve. It sold as a poem yet reads like a story. Many Thanks Joseph Lanzara.

I'm not bad at understanding archaic English, but Milton's language and symbolism is really too difficult for me. This book makes it easy to read Paradise Lost, and for those purists who want to read the original work without the translation, they can easily turn it off.
I did find this helpful, but at times the interpretation is too basic. There are times the author will take several lines and reduce them to one overly simplified sentence. This might help someone, such as a high school student, get through an assignment. But it falls far short of genuine insight.
