About the Author
Margaret Frith is the author of numerous children’s books, including several titles in the Who Was? series, such as Who Was Thomas Alva Edison?, Who Was Louis Braille?, Who Was Franklin Roosevelt? and Who Was Woodrow Wilson? She lives in New York City.Tomie dePaola was born in Meriden, Connecticut, in 1934, to a family of Irish and Italian background. His determination to create books for children led to a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, New York, and an MFA from the California College of Arts & Crafts in Oakland, California. His particular way with color, line, detail, and design have earned him many of the most prestigious awards in his field, among them a Caldecott Honor Award for Strega Nona, the Smithsonian Medal, the Kerlan Award from the University of Minnesota for his "singular attainment in children's literature," the Catholic Library Association's Regina Medal for his "continued distinguished contribution," and the University of Southern Mississippi Medallion. He was also the 1990 United States nominee for the Hans Christian Andersen Medal for illustration, and received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award for lifetime contribution to children's literature in 2011. DePaola has published almost 200 children's books in 15 different countries over the past 30 years. Among his most well-known titles are the Strega Nona series, 26 Fairmount Avenue, and The Legend of the Indian Paintbrush. DePaola lives in an interesting house in New Hampshire with his four dogs. His studio is in a large renovated 200-year-old barn.

I run a summer dance/arts camp for kids and we were seeking a book we could read to introduce Frida to the kids. This book was perfect! Some of her work is pretty intense for younger kids, so it's hard to just bring a regular art book to show. I found that this book really helped contextualize her art and life without overwhelming kids with her heavier topics and more graphic pieces.
This series of artist bios for kids is quite good. It uses the framework of a child's school report on the artist. The art reproductions give a great sense of the artist's work. This particular book on Frida Kahlo provides appropriate information for the target age. I have given several of these books to a 6 year old and she really enjoys them.
This book made a difficult to understand artist easy for kids. The pictures are beautiful and the story is perfectly told. The author makes Frida understandable but does not skimp on the details of her life.The story was fun and the kids loved the illustrations.
Written from the view of a pupil who has been assigned to write a paper on Frida. The author plays on the similarity of her own name, gives basic information about Kahlo, and interjects her own thoughts and experiences along the way.
Great book! Very easy to read for students and the images are very nice!
Its a little too hard for my younger kids but my 6th graders will enjoy it.
This is a beautifully illustrated and engaging book. We enjoyed it thouroughly. The questions are good and give it a little more depth. I appreciated the recap of Frida Kahlo's life that was age appropriate. I would have preferred they left out the photo of her smoking (in bed) and to top it off, commented on it. I have a 6 year old and she enjoyed the book.
Doesn’t mention that she was a communist, I was a little disappointed about that but over all it’s a great introduction to this leftist feminist hero.
