This is another collection of memorial photographs from the fabulous Burns Archive. I have to say, though, my first impression regarding this book is rather negative. I didn't pay attention to the size of the book and assumed it would be a large 9″ x 12″ book like the previous collections Sleeping Beauty I and II. (The dimensions of the above photograph on Amazon would suggest this as well.) However, it's a paltry 6″ x 6 3/4″. I'm not sure why it's so small? Is it because they're children? In any event, I'm still pretty annoyed by the high price ($43.75) combined with the small size.Having said that, it's another great collection of fascinating and very sad images. It even includes a small section at the end for modern memorial photography, which only seems to cover stillborn babies or babies that die soon after birth, before a proper photograph could be taken of them while alive.Although the deceased children are, of course, fascinating, for me the real poignancy of memorial photography comes with the stoic faces of the surviving parents and siblings. Looking at these photos always puts my mind back into the 19th century, thinking of how tentative life was back then, with untreatable epidemics just a cough or a sip away. Looking at the weary faces of some of the mothers, I can't help but wonder how many times they went through this experience in their lives? Entire families could be wiped out in a matter of days. There's so much that we take for granted in this age of modern medicine. Sometimes it's good to stop and reflect on the peace of mind that science has given us, and how if we'd been born a hundred years earlier, life would have been very, very different.
All the Burns Archive's books are extraordinary. No debate there. But I suppose that as a mortician for well over twenty years, perhaps that's why the Sleeping Beauty collections hold a special place in my heart. And my library. And I have seen it all over the years. Man, have I ever!The photographs vary from beautiful to tragic to surreal to heartbreaking. A gorgeous volume and exceedingly well done. Most highly recommended.
an excellent book all together, wished it was bigger though, but no matter the book itself is a work of art and the photos of the dead children are heart wrenching and yet intriquing all the same. back when death was accepted and not so taboo, this was the norm it seems to have photos taken of a loved ones last hours above the terra firma.anyone who in intersted in death, mortuary,history, or photography would love this book. although some would find this morbid, all the photos inside are tastefully done in the way that the family members or photographer saw fit to do so. im my opinion this book is top notch on this subject and truely one of a kind.
I had purchased the first of Stanley Burns' books on Memorial Photography "Sleeping Beauty" when it came out in 1990. I was fascinated by it. My friends thought it was morbid at first, then saw the beauty of this photography. A friend gave me the third book "Sleeping Beauty III" for my birthday. I love it,and was extremely touched by the recent pictures. My neice loved the first book so much, I ordered her book# 3 for her birthday.
Absolutely beautiful book. The more recent photographs are just as important & memorizing add the older photos. From beginning to end, I was hooked.
Not as big as first two but worth every penny. The sadness of these children make a mother want to pick them up, hold them and tell them it will be all right.
Beautiful and thought provoking, not at all morbid. These photos are the only way parents had to remember their children.
I couldn't have asked for a better book. It's rather small compared to the other two Sleeping Beauty books but it's still great!! Five Stars from me!
