The second book in an ongoing series about the Zulu War, this one concerns the desperate defense of the tiny mission station at Rourke's Drift, known to Americans largely as the subject of the movie Zulu. The criticism: there are a few typos and misspellings that were missed in the proofreading. Don't let that put you off of a gripping read. As with Brutal Valor, the story of Isandlwana, Mr. Mace has meticulously researched every scrap of recorded history, anecdote, and personal memoir available to give us a minute by minute description of not only what was happening inside the tiny fortress, detailing actions my men down to the lowest ranker, but what was going on in the greater world beyond the wall of mealie bags and biscuit boxes. And a gripping tale it is, maybe the most incredible story in the centuries-long chronicle of the Thin Red Line. B Company, 24th Regiment had been left behind to guard the regiment's stores. They were sitting on 22,000 rounds of ammunition when the Zulus attacked in the aftermath of the nearby slaughter at Isandlwana, clearly thinking to roll over the tiny garrison without breaking stride. When the relief column arrived the next morning, they had 800 bullets left.If you enjoy stories of blundering at the highest levels, heroism in the ranks, obscure history, or just a rip-snortin' tale of men in crisis, this is your book! No fiction writer could have offered this story, as no fiction writer would dare test your suspension of disbelief, but on the afternoon and evening of 22-23 January 1879, it happened in real life just as Mr. Mace has told it. Eleven Victoria Crosses were awarded for this action, the most in a single action in the history of the British Empire, and that includes Korea and both world wars. There would have been more, but Colour Sergeant Frank Bourne, the youngest senior NCO in the British army, requested he be given a lesser award, feeling correctly that that status, coupled with a VC, would forever freeze him in rank and duty assignment as a "company ornament."As I said, this is a book for lovers of heroics, lovers of history, lovers of tales of a bygone age, and quite simply lovers of action. This suffers nothing for being a true story. It's one of the most stirring tales this lover of action/adventure has ever read. I know I'll be there for the rest of this series, however long it lasts; if you're reading this review because this sort of story attracts you, don't miss it! It's simply the best.

I loved everything about this book. The narrative history was well researched & historically spot on. I have read extensively about the Zulul Wat of 1879 & this book would be ideal for anyone interested in the Rorke's Drift battle but not seeking anything too scholarly. Have to say the conflict events are vividly described & in brutal detail.Mace puts forward the points of view from both the English & Zulu perspective, indeed his take on the parts played by all the military personnel of both sides is completely objective & non-judgemental. Soething to be applauded.Perhaps I got the most satisfaction from his continued description of events after the Rorke's Drift (& Isandlhwana) battles. The political fall-out, the reputational damage control & blame deflection, put out from the failed senior officers of both sides. This, together with pen-picture of all active participants' post-war careers, lives & deaths, was well researched, extremely interesting & gave great closure to the whole reading experience.Apart from a couple of very minor typos, this book was a perfect pleasure to read.Highly recommended & I hope to read any further books from Mace on in this genre.

James Mace has again told a fascinating story of soldiers at war on their level. He has taken on the Zulu war of 1879 and examines it from the perspective of those who fought this battle of the war. Taking us through both sides of the conflict the reader gets to see how both saw the battle and the opposition they faced. I first learned of this particular aspect of the Zulu war as a young cadet studying the battle at Rorke's Drift from the engineer side of how one could defend this site against such overwhelming odds. I have followed this author's previous books of the Roman Legions, and when I saw this title come up I immediately purchased it to read. I was not disappointed as it gave me further insight to the battle and the war itself. I am happy to discover that this is not the end of the Zulu war books, and eagerly await the next instalment. Thank you Mr Mace for bringing this epic struggle back to life.

Mr Mace brings the same amount of research applied to his Soldier of Rome to the Anglo-Zulu War. As an American this is a fascinating part of world history that we do not learn much about. Like Mr. Mace, the first I heard of Rorke's Drift read from the movie "Zulu!" which I loved. But it did leave a lot of questions. Crucible of Honour ties in with Brutal Valor to bring Rorke's Drift into context with the Battle of Isandlwana. Like all well written historical novels, it informs the reader as well as any history book while also drawing him into the story. None of Mr. Mace's books disappoint.

Every bit as good as the Isandlwana prequel. Although fiction, there is quite a bit of historical information here about all the folks in the movie Zulu. I was surprised to learn how many of the real life characters were portrayed quite differently in the movie from Mace's research. Most of the men fighting at Rorke's Drift were quite young. This book picks up where the previous one left off, retelling the tales of a few to blend into this related but separate event. Mace is good about giving a Zulu perspective to the battle that I find important to get a grasp of the confusion that was occurring on both sides. The battle was fought from late afternoon until the wee hours of the following morning. The British were, with this battle, able to achieve some measure of accomplishment after the disastrous battle of Isandlwana earlier in the day. Can't wait for Mace's follow up on the remainder of the war, particularly since Crown Prince Louis Napoleon, a Frenchman, was killed when the Lord Chelmsford, the British GOC, was aware of how politically important he was.
