Amazon.com Review
Move over, Pat the Bunny! Patting the ducklings is only one of the highlights of Matthew Van Fleet's engaging, interactive fold-out book for very young children. Every page contains an animal surprise, from the fuzzy yellow ducklings to bumpy brown frogs, fuzzy gray koalas, and more. Children will enjoy touching the different textures and identifying shapes of the seven creatures that populate the book, but it's only when the fold-up page is fully extended that all is revealed--it's not a pink line at all, but a frog tongue! At the close of the book, the animals come together in a wild revelry of shape and color. Every small child needs a beginning book like this, one where they can guess and guess again, delighting in the all the tactile wonders as well as increasing their skills in shape and color recognition. And, if this one is already on the shelf, Van Fleet's One Yellow Lion and Spotted Yellow Frogs are fun, too. (Baby to preschool)

From Publishers Weekly
As he did in One Yellow Lion, Van Fleet once again exhibits a knack for creating animal characters of unusual personality and expressiveness-and he adds to their appeal in drafting them to teach simple identification lessons. Here his captivating cast lurks behind die-cut fold-out panels on each recto page, on which can be seen a labeled shape (circle, crescent, oval, etc.) that has a textured surface. The left-hand pages provide identification clues: thus, a "Woolly White" fleece-like rectangle turns out to be the body of a sheep, grazing with six of his pals. In a particularly comical scene, a "Sticky Pink" line is in fact a frog's tongue, as eight amphibians become entangled in their efforts to catch flies. Like Lion, the book's design is cleanly handsome, with stark white spreads showing only the tactile shape, three words of text and small artwork tied in to the hidden picture. The concluding spread folds out accordion-style to display the entire menagerie; on the reverse is one final surprise formation that any gymnastic troupe might envy. Ages 2-up. Looking back (our two boys are burly sulky angst-ridden teenagers now) this was the very best book ever for our kiddos! We still have our two copies. Each has its own wear and tear. The duckie on the cover page is somewhat patchy due to all the tactile stroking, touching, sometimes chewing. These are full-immersion, full-sensory books for young kiddos. Those that are not yet able to read will get a huge kick out of touching the fuzzy duck, touching the sticky lizard tongue, etc.Highly recommend as a baby gift for any new moms. The book can be purchased with or without the extra (fancy) box and toy duck. Our toy ducks had built-in squeakers. Today's ducks apparently do not. (I can also say that we ran through many emegency-replacement duckies through the toddler years...)If you are looking for a new-baby gift - buy this plus the "Goodnight Gorilla" board book. Both are excellent stories, very interactive, and the kiddos love them (and remember them).Definitely some quality baby+mom (and baby+dad and baby+grandparent) time spent with these books. Looking back, this was a great investment in our family!JDMc
I love all of Matthew Van Fleet's books. They have adorable illustrations and I appreciate that these are interactive ... the next step after board books. Very interactive - lots of fold outs and different textures. Throughout, the book each page contains either a fold-out, for the child to manipulate or a textured surface for the child to interact with and feel. I like telling my child what that feeling is called as they touch the surface. There are very few words throughout the book which is appropriate for the age-level for which this book is aimed. The only drawback with this style is that the child might tear out the fold-outs or rip out the textured surfaces. So just watch them carefully, don't let them play with the book on their own and remind them to do it slowly and gently. So far we have had no rips. Fingers crossed.
I'd come across this book by accident in a consignment store, and loved it so much, I bought it (new) from Amazon as soon as I got home. Move over, Pat the Bunny, indeed!Yes, I do agree the pages seem a little flimsy for the age group for which the book is intended. Were they any thicker, however, and some of the textures would be hard to appreciate before unfolding the flaps (like the thin sticky frog tongues). With supervision, the book should withstand the use. Otherwise, I'd be willing to replace it just for how extraordinarily good the content is.The idea and the execution are clean, concise, and simply brilliant. Every single page gives a texture, a color, a shape, and an animal, and all that beautifully drawn and with no visual clutter. The minimalist wording made the book the perfect choice as soon as my son was old enough to notice his hands (about 2 months) - I've been propping him against my chest, reading the words and pointing to the shapes and animals, and putting his hand against the textures, and he seems really captivated. The textures are:- fuzzy- bumpy- furry- scaly- woolly- scratchy- stickyThe colors are:- yellow- brown- gray- green- white- blue- pinkThe shapes are:- circle- triangle- square- oval- rectangle- crescent- lineThe animals are:- ducklings- toads- koalas- iguanas- sheep- sharks- frogs (frog tongues)Our personal favorites are the scratchy sharks (what a surprising texture!) and the sticky frog tongues (obviously). The little rhyme and a four-page fold out at the end are an added bonus.
One of our favorite books. We are in our fourth or fifth copy as a family. But it’s well worth it! They love love love this book!I was a nanny for fifteen years and this is one of my all time favorites.
I adore this book! I love how it ties in shapes, colors, animals, and textures. I would give it five stars except that the flaps are rather flimsy for a toddler book; I would recommend only using it under supervision if you want it to last.
The concept is adorable, and helps to teach both shapes, textures, and animals. Unfortunately the age group that seem to love textures also love to rip pages, which has been a frequent risk with my 11-month old daughter. Because the pages fold out to reveal the animals, they become endangered when she gets excited and wants to pull things closer. I wish they had made the pages a bit sturdier to combat this.
My baby loves it! Her favorite are the long extended pages pictures.
One of our favorite baby books. I regularly purchase this book as gifts for friends. I like the simplicity of the pages. It begins simply as color, shape, and texture. Then you unfold the right page to reveal animals. We also add in counting the animals. So, that's color, texture, shape, animals, and counting. Big hit with everyone.
