This story is based on the diary of a real Moravian woman. It reads very well. It is not only an engaging narrative, but is tremendously helpful to the genealogist/historian in understanding the condition and experiences of women in the time period and in this setting.

No one today can fully comprehend the bravery of those early pioneers and, particularly, the great devotion of women in the early development of our faith and our 'new' nation.

This is a rare contemporaneous narrative by an 18th C. woman, taken from diaries (a Moravian tradition) and turned in to a smooth narrative. Great insight in to those life and times in Colonial and post-Revolutionary War America. Moravians were known for being progressive in gender (educating girls; Salem College is still a good school in NC!) and race (for the times); for celebrating Christmas with traditions such as the under-the-tree village and the many-pointed Moravian star; for their music and hymns; and....furniture! (Not as severe as Shaker - check out the Museum for Early Southern Decorative Arts).My mother passed her 1946 edition down to me; and it helped me further honor my Moravian heritage. The Moravian faith branched off from Roman Catholicism 100 years before Martin Luther; John Hus was martyred. Like later Protestants, Moravians believed in literacy, and were active in reaching out to Native Americans. A diary of a great-great-great uncle of mine mourns the loss of a canoe full of books on a river going to visit a Creek tribe!Much to learn and enjoy from this unusual book; highly recommended for women's studies programs.
